PENDER ISLAND BEACH SPRING POETS COVE

1. SAY ALOHA TO SOME GOOD WEATHER

You don’t have to fly all the way to the middle of the Pacific to enjoy some aloha-style weather. Pender Island boasts a wonderful sub-Mediterranean climate. In fact, it’s known as the ‘Hawaii of Canada’! Blessed with some of the mildest weather in the country, the island is drier than Vancouver and more protected than Victoria, and the spring blossoms can emerge as early as February.

2. THE BEST THINGS COME IN SMALL PACKAGES
At just 36-kilometres-square, Pender Island is home to just 2,200 inhabitants. What better way to escape all the hustle and bustle of the city and sample an altogether simpler, laid-back lifestyle for a few days? And for an island so small, Pender is simply overflowing with quaint and curious attractions.

3. TWO ISLANDS FOR THE PRICE OF ONE
Pender Island actually consists of two island: North Pender and South Pender. The two are separated by a narrow canal and connected by a one-lane bridge. The canal was first dredged in 1902 to make it large enough for a steamship, The Iroquois, to traverse from the Hope Bay dock to Sidney, providing a far safer route than around South Pender. Check out the short ‘Bridge Trail’ along the east side of the canal. There you can watch the boats traversing the canal and maybe spot some eagles and otters.

4. STOCK UP AT THE FARMERS’ MARKET
The Pender Island Farmers’ Market runs from Easter to Thanksgiving each year, so spring is a great time to sample some delicious local treats. Located in the Agricultural Hall each Saturday from 9.30am to 1pm, you’ll find everything from vegetables, fruits, flowers, goat cheese and eggs, to baked goods, jams and jellies, sushi, plants, art, crafts, jewellery and music.

5. BEACH TIME
Pender Island’s mild climate means one thing in the spring: beach time. The island offers the most public beach access points in the Gulf Islands. And there is plenty to keep the kids interested, as the island’s tidal pools provide endless hours of family entertainment as you hunt for hermit crabs, tubeworms, starfish and anemones. Check out the stretch between Higgs Beach and Brooks Point.

6. AND… RELAX
The beautifully-designed West Coast-style lodge at Poets Cove Resort and Spa boasts stunning ocean views and sunsets. At the end of good day exploring, you can relax on your private patio or balcony and watch the boats gently bobbing in the resort’s private marina in sparkling Bedwell Harbour.
